The Championship of Champions Tournament in Paris in 1913

Complete details of the major "Championship of Champions" catch-as-catch-can tournament that was held in Paris in 1913.

As is well-known, Greco-Roman was the most popular wrestling style in France (and Continental Europe as a whole) in the early 1900s and there were a ton of Greco-Roman pro wrestling tournaments held all across Europe. By 1913, however, Greco-Roman pro wrestling's popularity has dropped off greatly in France (for a number of reasons). Therefore, when in 1913 Charles Debray (the director of Nouveau Cirque) decided to promote wrestling at his circus in Paris he opted to promote another style instead. In the U.S. and the UK that style was known as catch-as-catch-can, but in France at this time they decided to call it lutte de combat (combat wrestling).

From May 30 through July 7 Debray promoted a tournament in Paris, which he billed as a World Championship of Combat Wrestling. There were over 30 participants including some notable names such as Constant le Marin, Jimmy Esson, Andre Cherpillod, Karl Saft, Maurice Deriaz and Raymond Cazeaux. The Belgian Constant le Marin, who was one of the top new stars in Europe at the time and would go on to be one of the all-time European greats, won the tournament. That first tournament served as a blueprint for what was to come. Later in the year Debray promoted at least one more combat wrestling tournament, which was held outside of Paris and was won by Stanislaus Zbyszko.

Debray's final tournament for the year was by far the biggest one. It was billed as the Championship of Champions and also as a World Championship (but the Championship of Champions was the main name). The alcoholic beverage company "Dubonnet" sponsored the tournament, as they had done with Debray's previous Paris tournament. The Automobile Club of France was somehow involved as well as their president was the top man in the jury for the tournament and a few meetings about the tournament were held at their headquarters. And on top of that the popular sports newspaper "L'Auto", which had promoted a number of the World Greco-Roman Championship tournaments in Paris in the past, was covering this tournament and pushing it quite a bit. They even did a special stand-alone edition of the newspaper with photos and bios of the wrestlers.

The tournament was held at Nouveau Cirque (New Circus) in Paris. It lasted two and a half months and featured about 90 wrestlers from over 20 countries so on that basis alone it was one of the biggest tournaments in European pro wrestling history. And there were a number of notable names in the tournament too. First of all, there was Stanislaus Zbyszko, who was one of the biggest stars in both Europe and the United States and who had previously won a World Greco-Roman Championship tournament in Paris. There was also Jess Pedersen from Denmark, who had won three World Championships in Paris and was one of the top European stars of the era. Joe Rogers from the U.S., Taro Miyake from Japan (billed as World Jiu-Jitsu champion), Jimmy Esson from Scotland, Marinus van Riel from The Netherlands, Karl Saft from Germany and Maurice Deriaz from Switzerland were some of the other popular names in the tournament. Former boxing World Heavyweight champion Jack Johnson had a few matches as well, as did the Serbian giant Simon Antonitch. In terms of French wrestlers Raoul de Rouen was the one who got the most focus, and there was also the veteran Emile Vervet.

The initial advertising of the tournament was built around the participation of five stars - Zbyszko, Pedersen, Rogers, Miyake and the Turk Yussiff Mahmout (Frank Gotch's former policeman). Unfortunately, Mahmout did not wrestle in the tournament. Despite those five names being positioned as the headline attractions going into the tournament, going out of the tournament someone else ended up getting all the attention. That someone else was Stanislaus' younger brother Wladek. Wladek Zbyszko, who was 22 years old at this point, had already been wrestling for a few years and won a few minor Greco-Roman tournaments in Europe, but was by no means a big name yet. He ended up being the winner of the Championship of Champions tournament and you could say this was his first big accomplishment in professional wrestling. He was referred to as a prodigy by the French press and generally the press sounds very impressed by his in-ring skills, especially given his young age.

Sidenote: During the tournament Wladek was billed under his real surname Cyganiewicz, but below I'll be listing him as Zbyszko. And yes, despite the different surnames they were billed under, it was acknowledged that Wladek was Stanislaus' younger brother.

The Championship of Champions
- Wladek Zbyszko (Cyganiewicz), Stanislaus Zbyszko, Joe Rogers, Jess Pedersen, Jimmy Esson, Jack Johnson, Taro Miyake, Maurice Deriaz
- Raoul de Rouen, Li Hung Po Fou Tschiju, Anastace Anglio, Ivan Spul, Willy Urbach, Babu Gobar, Almela le Picador, Francois Fournier
- Grenna Raphaeli, William Thompson, Adali Pehlivan, Ambrosio de Souza, Constant de Paris, Jarousinky, Jean-Baptiste Paradis, Billy Wood

Now let's talk about the format of the tournament. The wrestlers were split into three weight classes - lightweights (below 65 kg / 143 pounds), middleweights (between 65 and 85 kg), and heavyweights (above 85 kg / 187 pounds). The lightweights and middleweights would wrestle in a series of elimination matches until there were were four left of each. In order to be eliminated a wrestler had to lose three matches. Ultimately there was to be a World Lightweight and World Middleweight champions crowned. And then those four lightweights and four middleweights were to wrestle in a round robin tournament together to determine which four of them would go on to the final stage and mix it up with whatever heavyweights were left after the heavyweight elimination phase was over to determine the winner of the Championship of Champions. That's how the format was explained, but ended up being something else and overall the initial format wasn't completely adhered to. More about that below.

The matches were to be wrestled in 2 out of 3 falls. There were no time limits - the wrestlers were to wrestle until there was a winner. There was a three-minute break between the falls.

A wrestler could win in two ways:
- By pinning his opponent's shoulders to the mat for three seconds.
- By making his opponent submit, which could be by either verbally giving up or by tapping on the mat twice.

All types of strikes were prohibited - fists, fingers, edge of the hand, elbows, knees, head and feet. Eye gouging and hitting your opponent's private parts was also prohibited.

At the referee's discretion, if there was to be a third fall the ref could postpone it for another day. The referee, by coordinating with the jury, could also disqualify a wrestler if:
- They broke the rules (as described above).
- He thought there was some sort of a pre-match arrangement between the wrestlers and the match didn't appear to be legit.
- The wrestlers were wrestling too passively/defensively.
- A wrestler walked away from the ring/mat.

There was also a jury, which was a common thing in European pro wrestling back then. The jury had the power to fine a wrestler if they thought that the wrestler was wrestling too rough. The fines were usually 50 or 100 francs, and a few fines were indeed announced during the tournament. Particularly guys like Jimmy Esson, Willy Urbach and Ivan Spul were the biggest offenders when it came to this. The Paris crowd did not like such rough wrestlers either and would boo them and sometimes even throw produce at them.

The wrestlers had to wipe themselves off before each match - no oil, water or excessive sweat was allowed to be on their body when the match began. Their chest, arms and legs had to be bare. Knee pads were allowed.

The “ring” was to be 4 meters by 6 meters (13 feet by 19 feet, approximately) and it was to have ropes like in boxing. That said, they also mentioned that if there were no ropes the wrestlers had to stick to wrestling on the mat and not go outside of it. The mat itself was 4 cm (1.57 inches) thick.

Another note to make before I move onto the results is that while this big tournament was going on there were some other wrestling shows taking place in Paris. Shortly after the tournament began a series of combat wrestling shows were held at Folies Bergere. The shows were centered around the Cherpillod brothers (Armand and Andre) taking on various opponents. Then from November onward there were shows at The Olympia built around Constant le Marin. The fact that le Marin and the Cherpillod brothers were in Paris during this time, but did not participate in the Championship of Champions tournament is kind of interesting. In fact, Armand Cherpillod was advertised for the tournament, but ended up wrestling at Folies Bergere instead.

Final note. Below I've focused on the heavyweights. I've only listed the lightweight and middleweight finals and the matches with the middleweights once they started wrestling the heavyweights. The initial elimination matches with the lightweights and middleweights are not listed.

Around this time is when the final stage of the tournament began - the stage to determine the winner of the Championship of Champions. Initially there were over 30 wrestlers and it seems like they were to compete in a round robin tournament of sorts. I use words like "it seems" and "of sorts" because the whole thing is quite confusing. Wrestlers kept joining the tournament, even as late as the end of the December. There was also Maurice Deriaz for example, who just randomly stopped wrestling in the tournament despite winning all of his matches. It's confusing. To make things even more confusing, for the first week or two some of the matches were said to be part of the semi-final stage while other matches on the same card were said to be from the final stage. I have no idea what that was all about. Anyway, long story short, the wrestlers in this final pool of over 30 were to wrestle each other until finally the two guys with the most wins and no losses faced off in the final. The wrestlers in this final stage were all heavyweights with the exception of Deriaz, Miyake, d'Ursin and Simonon, who were from the middleweights group.
